If you're looking for a good keyword research tool, especially if you're an AdSense publisher or a "bum marketer", you'll want to take a look at James Jones' Micro Niche Finder software. I bought this software not too long ago and I wanted to share with you my thoughts and experiences with the tool.
Important Note: This is an independent, actual review. I'm not associated with James Jones in any way, nor did I receive a free copy of Micro Niche Finder (MNF). If you do purchase MNF through my affiliate link, I will receive a commission for the sale, however, so I'm offering a free Micro Niche Finder bonus to anyone who purchases MNF through my affiliate link. More details below.
Do You Need A Keyword Tool?
Wait! Much as I like MNF, it's not super cheap at $97. That's a lot of money. So the first think you need to ask yourself is "Do I need to spend money on a keyword tool?"
There are free keyword tools out there, and some of them are pretty good. The best is Google's AdWords Keyword Tool, which was designed for AdWords advertisers but is free for anyone to use:
- Read Using the AdWords Keyword Tool for some basic instructions on how to use it.
- Read Keyword Search Tool Guide for detailed instructions on how to find low-competition keywords using the AdWords Keyword Tool.
Micro Niche Finder uses the AdWords Keyword Tool as its primary data source, so it's a good idea to learn as much as you can about it.
So if you can do keyword research for free, why bother purchasing keyword research software? Ultimately, it's all about saving time. Serious keyword research takes time, even with advanced tools. A good paid keyword tool lets you perform common and/or repetitive tasks more quickly and more easily than the free tools.
My advice is to start with the free tools, then when the time and effort it takes to use them starts to get to you, switch to a paid tool like Micro Niche Finder.
What is Micro Niche Finder?
Micro Niche Finder is a software application that runs on your Microsoft Windows computer (unfortunately, there's no direct support for Macintosh or Linux computers, though the software may run in Windows emulation software on those platforms). You need an Internet connection to use MNF, but there are no monthly charges for using the software.
Micro Niche Finder lets you do a number of useful things:
- Keyword list generation — Give it a root keyword and it will generate a list of related keywords complete with details on how many times per month each keyword is searched for and each keyword's average per-click cost to advertisers.
- Brainstorming — Looking for a niche idea? The brainstorming feature gives you some keyword phrases to start with.
- Hot trends — Get the 20 keyword phrases that are hot at that very moment. A great starting point for researching emerging trends.
- Saved results — You can do a number of searches and revisit the data without re-searching. This feature alone saves a lot of time.
- Background gathering — Got lots of data to search? Let MNF do it in the background while you're busy with other things.
- Strength of Compeition (SOC) metric — Get a quick assessment of how competitive a keyword phrase is with a single click using this unique metric.
- Export to multiple formats — Once you've gathered your data, you can export it for use in other tools in one of several formats, including CSV, XLS and XML.
You also get one-click access to various keyword-related online functions, such as searching Google for related content, affiliate programs, and other useful things.
Does Micro Niche Finder Work As Promised?
Yes, it works quite well. I like using it because it's both a time-saver and a click-saver. I can quickly run through a list of keywords to find the ones that have real promise and then focus my research on those. It's a lot easier than using the AdWords Keyword Tool directly.
The SOC metric is also pretty useful. It's not necessarily always right, but it's a good first estimate at how much competition is targeting a given keyword. I still like to look at the number of incoming links to each result in the top 10 search results for a keyword as an extra sanity check, but the SOC number weeds out a lot of keywords before I get to that level of detail.
MNF gets regular updates, too, which are free.
What's Wrong With MNF?
Not much is wrong. Obviously, if you're not running Windows then this isn't the tool for you. Some of the features are very obscure and not that useful. But on the whole there's nothing really wrong with the application.
So yes, I do recommend this tool if you need to do some serious keyword research.
